Can you mix run flat tyres with normal tyres?

Although there are no legislation in the UK that bans the mixing of run flat and conventional tyres on a vehicle, it is not recommended to mix run flat with normal tyres. Doing so would compromise the control and performance of the vehicle.

Run flat tyres are specifically designed to perform differently from conventional tyres, providing the ability to drive a limited distance (up to 50 miles) at reduced speeds (up to 50 mph) even when punctured.

When mixed with traditional tyres, the handling of the vehicle can be affected. Leading to a potential loss of grip on the road. As run flat tyres have stiffer sidewalls and a different construction, they may not respond to steering and braking in the same way.

This can cause an imbalance in the handling, resulting in less control and potentially dangerous driving situations.

It is important for drivers to understand that the type of tyre fitted to a vehicle can have a significant impact on its performance and safety.

Matching the right type of tyre to a vehicle's requirements is crucial. It can affect the overall handling, braking distance, and stability of the vehicle.

If you are unsure about tyre choice, it is advisable to consult with a qualified tyre fitter before making any decisions on tyre replacements.
