A man has appeared in court accused of driving his van with no front tyre after drinking alcohol.
Darren Foster was alleged to have been caught travelling in his Mercedes Sprinter on Fisher Lane, in Cramlington, while his front, right hand wheel was on its rim. The 37-year-old was stopped by police nearby and breathalysed at the roadside.
Foster, of Appleyard Grove, in Cramlington, was in the dock at South East Northumberland Magistrates' Court this week, where he pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence but not guilty to dangerous driving. The offences were alleged to have taken place on March 18 this year.

Greg Flaxen, prosecuting, said the dangerous driving trial could take place before magistrates. He added: "It's a matter for this court. It's very simple. Police allegedly come across this defendant in his van. They allegedly notice that the front, right hand side tyre is gone and is being driven on its rim.
"It's completely suitable for this court." Michael Gibson, defending, agreed. Magistrates accepted jurisdiction and released Foster on unconditional bail to next appear back before the same court for trial on June 15. In the meantime, he was given an interim driving ban.
