MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis City Council is set to vote on an ordinance which the council hopes will reform the Memphis Police Department.
“I think it’s terrible and I’m going to be speaking against it tomorrow,” said Paul Klein, a protestor.
On Apr. 10, protestors held a rally outside of Memphis City Hall.
I’m trying to bring another voice, another color voice, frankly, into the mix crying for justice for Tyre,” said Klein, a Caucasian protestor.
In solidarity with the family and loved ones of Tyre Nichols, community organizers held a rally in Downtown Memphis on Monday, April 10, 2023, marking the three-month anniversary of Nichols' death.
Klein and other protestors believe the proposed ordinance which council members will vote on is watered down.
“Some things might be a little bit better, but some things don’t change the current laws, as they exist,” said A.J. Abraham, a protestor.
The ordinance addresses traffic stops, officer profanity, body cameras, among other topics.
“It’s watered down. It’s a compromise and it’s not what the people are asking for and it’s not what Tyre’s family is asking for,” said Klein.
Some protestors said they were sent letters from the city council asking them not to attend meetings in the future after they said council members accused them of using profanity and vulgar language in meetings.

Those protestors said the accusations are not true.
“They don’t really want to really hear the real reasons why we’re there. They’re not respecting our rights,” said Abraham, who said she was not sent one of the letters but admits she has used profanity in a council meeting.
