MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Tyre Nichols is now being memorialized at the National Civil Rights Museum.
An exhibit celebrating his life went on display Thursday.
Six local artists were brought in to paint skate decks with pictures of Nichols, placed next to projections of his skateboarding videos and photography.
His family was given a special look at the exhibit before it opened to the public.
The art brought his mother, RowVaughn Wells, to tears.
Wells said she never expected to see her son memorialized next to historical figures like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X.
“It was an honor to see that exhibit. I just never knew that my son would end up in the Civil Rights Museum,” she said. “It was just beautiful and very emotional.”

Dr. Noelle Trent, the museum’s collections director, said watching Nichols’ family react to the exhibit made putting it together all worth it.
“They hugged us, they said thank you,” Trent said. “Our goal was to genuinely honor Tyre, to celebrate him. There is so much evil and ugliness in the world that we wanted to bring forth light and beauty.”
Trent said she and the rest of the staff at the National Civil Rights Museum felt especially impacted by Nichols’ death because it happened so close to home.
She said the exhibit, called “Lifting up the Light,” aims to heal Nichols’ family and all those affected by the case.
“Art’s power is in helping us process and heal. That’s what this exhibition and installation is meant to do,” Trent said. “We will never fully understand what it has been like for them, but we can stand next to them and support them through that.”
The exhibit will be on display until Labor Day.
