Reynolds wary of “unknown” tyres – Auto Action

David Reynolds is ready to embrace the “unknowns” ahead of the Australian Grand Prix Supercars sprint round.
In a season of unknowns such as the new Gen3 cars, one of the biggest at Albert Park is the Dunlop rubber being bolted on this weekend.
Tyres were a major talking point last year with many drivers suffering sudden blowouts throughout the weekend.
With the new Gen3 cars not creating as much aerodynamic pressure as its predecessors, the new SuperSoft tyres may not experience as much duress as 2022.
This is the take of Grove Racing’s Reynolds, who admitted the tyres are an “unknown” heading into practice 1.
“They (Dunlop) think this year it won’t damage as quickly because we have less downforce and a lighter car, but no one really knows.
“I kind of like it like that because it throws up challenges and they are the best races.”
Hitting the ground running on a busy day where no less than five Supercars sessions are on the schedule will be critical.
Reynolds said another thing to consider is track evolution being a street track as Supercars embark on its first ever Thursday race.
“It is quite dusty and dirty now being an everyday road, but over the weekend there will be more and more grip as the more rubber is laid down.
“The car we will have on Thursday is not going to be the car we will race with on Sunday.
“Plus its a street track with painted lines everywhere, which are black and match the road, so you don’t really know where the grip is.
“But I like the challenge and when the car is set up well it is a lot of fun.”
